I used to bartend, and whenever I was washing glasses at the tri-sink, customers that were sitting directly in front of me would often say, "Smile!!" It would irritate the shit out of me. So, while I'm knee deep in dirty glasses, and frantically washing them because the bar is slammed, I'm supposed to have a big silly grin on my face? I so wanted to tell them to f**k off!
I hate this with a passion, whether aimed at the wait staff or anyone. . Just plain rude and pretentious if you ask me. Go to a comedy club or dinner theater or something if a smile is that much of a prerequisite for your dining experience.
